Women’s Self-Discovery Network is an online resource created by me, Sherry Tobin, to help women in midlife who want to uncover their answers to the questions “who am I”, “what do I want to do with my life” and “how am I going to do it”?

According to the dictionary, the definition of self-discovery is “the act or process of gaining knowledge or understanding of your abilities, character and feelings”.

Our goal  at Women’s Self-Discovery Network is to help women navigate through their personal journeys of self-discovery.  We do that by providing them with strategies, tools and resources so they can come out the other side with a greater knowledge of who they are and how they can create the life that they want for themselves.

Women’s Self-Discovery Network is about self-discovery and transformation.  It is about understanding yourself, understanding your passions, defining your goals and staying motivated to enable you to reach your full potential.

Why Self-Discovery

I believe a major shift happens in midlife for women.  It’s a time when we start questioning who we are and what we want to do with the rest of our lives.  It’s a time of confusion for most women as they don’t feel like “who they were before”.  It feels like our whole outlook on life is changing.  I like to call it “The Time of Questioning”.

As women, we have spent the majority of our lives in a caretaker role(s).  The roles of wife, mother, employee, daughter…  In midlife, we are looking to reverse the caretaker system, and take care of ourselves, and actually give ourselves permission to take care of ourselves.

  • Are you feeling you are living your life on “auto pilot”?
  • Are you a wanting to “restart” your life to find a better fit for the person you feel you are NOW?
  • Are you feeling conflicted, confused or lost about where your life is going?
  • Are you looking to define a life for yourself that makes you feel happy and content?
  • Do you feel you are at a cross-road in your life, but don’t know which direction to go?
  • Are you wanting to make a difference in your life, but don’t quite know how?

If these thoughts sound familiar, the Women’s Self-Discovery Network is here to help.  We will encourage you to re-connect with your life and take some immediate actions to kick it up a notch.

While it can seem daunting to reinvent your life, a few good decisions, a plan, and some time are all it takes to dramatically change things for the better.

Many of us live our lives randomly. We lack direction or vision for what we want. We watch things come and go from our lives. If something enters our life that looks good, we grab it. Sometimes, we’re just trading current challenges for what appears to be a lesser challenge. But we can choose to find or create something that’s different and better.

Living by chance isn’t the optimal way to live.

A great life rarely happens by accident. It has to be created with intent and effort. Just as a beautiful sandcastle doesn’t spontaneously rise from the beach, a beautiful life requires the same intention and energy.

I have discovered that every woman arrives at midlife with goals to fulfill and dreams to make real.  Women’s Self-Discovery Network helps you discover your long held dreams, identify where you are in the process of transition, determine your personal strengths and resources, estimate you readiness for change and then help you create a personalized road map to turn your dreams into reality.

We do that with self-awareness exercises, inspirational quotes and blog posts, interviews with women who have done what you dream of doing, and guiding you to take charge of your future and create the life that you dream of.

Women’s Self Discovery Network is all about helping you through your process and making it easier to start on a positive path to change.  A great life can be yours, if you’re willing to do the work!

Together, Let’s Work Through Your Process….

Who Is Sherry Tobin?

The Basics

  • My name is Sherry Prince Tobin
  • I was born and raised in a small community in rural Newfoundland, Canada
  • I am an only child
  • I am a December baby
  • I moved to Ontario, Canada when I was 23
  • I am married and I have two grown daughters
  • I am a cat lover
  • I am an amateur photographer (a lot of my own photos are used on this site)
  • I enjoy people and I am easy to get along with
  • I love to; travel, sit in nature, enjoy the warmth of the sun, watch sunrise and sunsets, read, research, manage, collect, plan, organize, share, explore, and teach.
  • Five words others have used to describe me – loyal, nurturing, accepting, honest and open-minded

I am like most women. I married, raised a family, and built a career.  These things took up all my time, and there was no time or room in my life for considering what I might want to do with my life… “after”.  Then one day, I felt a change within me.  I felt discontent with my life and didn’t understand why.

Because I am always asking questions and seeking answers, I took to the internet and the library to try to determine “what is wrong with me”.  After all, “I have a good life, why and I feeling unhappy”.  At this same time I also talked to other ladies around my age in my social group, only to discover that every one of them were feeling the same feelings of discontent.

My research led me to discover that this is what is termed as “Midlife Identify Crisis or Midlife Transition”.  It happens one day – like a small tremor.  Symptoms start to appear with a whimper or possibly a big bang, and not just in the form of love handles and grey hairs (of which I have plenty!!).

  • Maybe it’s just the beginning of some restless feelings.
  • Maybe a child leaves home or your job starts to feel dissatisfying.
  • Or maybe something more dramatic happens — a parent dies, you lose your job, your spouse has an affair.

Before you have time to know what’s hit you, you are caught up in a full-blown identity crisis. The world as you’ve known it has turned itself upside down and inside out.

Sometimes life events can trigger a full-scale midlife crisis, and  other times it creeps up on you slowly like a low-grade fever. Either way, there’s a high probability that every one of us will encounter some sort of personal, career, emotional, or existential upheaval during this period of life. For those of us with a big red X painted on our foreheads, we might even have all of these happen to us at the same time!

Armed with the information that I was learning and the steps I was taking, I pulled myself thru this period of transition.

There didn’t seem to be a ready resource of information or resources available to help women through this period of Midlife Transition… and that is how the Women’s Self-Discovery Network was born.

Why I Do What I Do:

A very good friend of mine tells me that one of my greatest strengths is creating community and leadership.  So, in fulfilling my Vision Statement and in keeping with my purpose of living my life with meaning, I decided to create Women’s Self-Discovery Network.  My goal with  creating Women’s Self Discovery Network is to help women  in midlife who want to uncover their answers to the questions  “who am I”, “what do I want to do with my life” and “how am I going to do it”?

I will do this by sharing what I have learned on my own journey of self-discovery; through the sharing of information and resources that I have found helpful, and by creating an online community where women can come together to share their own stories of personal transformation. I want to help other women navigate through their personal journeys and come out the other side with a greater knowledge of who they are and how they can create the life that they want for themselves.

I have taken on this project because I know from personal experience what it is like to feel empty and depressed and not understand why  you are feeling this way. I understand the feelings of wanting/needing to make a change in your life, but  feeling confused, lost,  alone and unsure of how to make those changes.   I understand the feeling of being “stuck” and not  knowing  what to do about it.

If I can help just one woman make her way through this transformation just a little bit easier or less stressful, then I will feel like I have accomplished what I have set out to do.  If together we can help many women through this time of upheaval,  and share what we have learned through our experiences and stories,  I can hope by the time our  daughters enter into this period of their lives there will be a greater understanding of the process of how to navigate through it  so their journeys will be than stressful than ours have been.

How Women’s Self-Discovery Network Was Born

I started to read everything I could about midlife and midlife identity crisis and ways in which other women have pulled themselves through it.

I discovered the answer was simply to rediscover who you are NOW and to work towards your passion and purpose.  Sounds too simple to be true, right?  However, once you start to walk that path, and find the answers to these questions, life seems to become calmer and more peaceful.

When you put your energy into what you know about yourself and what you believe in, then your life purpose will emerge.  You then work towards recreating your life so that it aligns with what is important to you – NOW.

I have spent many hours researching and going through the steps of self-discovery.   It is not something that happens overnight, it is definitely a “journey of self-discovery”, but moving forward with passion and purpose, I discovered, is definitely the way through this “midlife identity crisis”.

When I first went through my “process”, I created a Vision Statement.  Part of that Vision Statement reads:

I will live each day;

  • Working on my dream to fulfill my purpose in of helping other women who are also on a journey of self-discovery
  • Using my social skills to bring women together to uplift one another, and support each other through this confusing time in our lives
  • Sharing what I have learned so that others may benefit

So, in fulfilling my Vision Statement and in keeping with my purpose of living my life with meaning, I decided to create Women’s Self-Discovery Network.
